“All governance boards, no matter what type of school or how many schools they govern, have three core functions:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  • Holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the effective and efficient performance management of staff; and
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent.”

The governors undertake various activities in addition to their meetings, visiting the school to see lessons, examples of work and talk with individual staff.  They are also involved leadership of the school acting to support and provide challenge on issues including:

  • Objective setting
  • School policy development and review
  • Budget Management
  • Scrutiny of performance data (considering progress of pupils, including those with SEND and those with Pupil Premium)
  • Considering staff workload and teacher recruitment
